SharePoint Communication Sites and O365 Delve – July 20, 2017 2-4pm

Communication Sites

This month we have two topics, SharePoint’s new Communications Sites and Office 365’s Delve.

Communication sites allow the user to share: news, reports, status, and other information in a visually compelling format using one of several different layouts. Communication sites are responsive and can be viewed from anywhere on any device. You would typically use Communication sites to broadcast information out to a broad audience, so typically only a small set of members contribute content that is consumed by a much larger audience. Team sites are a better choice when most members can contribute content and the information is limited to only the members of the site.

Delve is a landing page in Office 365 that uses Office Graph to locate content that may otherwise be difficult to find. I like to say, rather than you looking for documents that you need, the most likely documents you’d be looking for have come to find you.

Come see how these productivity tools can enrich your life today.

Enterprise Mobility + Security – June 22, 2017 2-4pm

NOTE: This month we are technically meeting on fourth Thursday of June, but Drew was not available on the third Thursday. The time and place are the same as a typical month.

EMS

Securing enterprise data, productivity, and collaboration is critically important to organizations, especially as they migrate to the cloud. Office 365 is committed to securing this transition via Enterprise Mobility + Security (previously known as Microsoft Enterprise Mobility Suite). This includes identity-driven security solutions that protect an organization’s assets and identify breaches before they can cause damage. Drew will share with us how EM+S secures the “front door”, protects data from user mistakes, detects attacks, and facilitates mobile device management.

Just one year after Microsoft’s May 4, 2016 SharePoint Virtual Summit, Microsoft’s Corporate VP, Jeff Teper, declared, “The future of SharePoint is now!” This all happened last week during his keynote address at the May 6th Twin Cities SharePoint Saturday. Teper went on to welcome everyone to “The second year of SharePoint’s resurgence.” To that end, Microsoft is holding another global SharePoint Virtual Summit next week, on Tuesday, May 16, 2017; you can register to attend the virtual event for free:

Dynamics 365 – April 20, 2017 2-4pm

Topic: Dynamics 365

Did Dynamics 365 just show up in your Office 365 App Launcher? Are you afraid to click on it? Me too. This offering is huge and intimidating.

  • Customer Service
  • Sales
  • Field Service
  • Project Service Automation
  • Operations

While we’ll dive into the ERP capabilities another day, on Thursday Chris will give us a general overview of Dynamics 365 CRM and he’ll demo how we can leverage it. He’ll also provide insight into Microsoft’s roadmap for this suite of functionality.

Going Mobile with Office 365 – February 16, 2017 2-4PM CT

Topic: Going Mobile with Office 365

Going Mobile

Wherever you are at right now, the one thing you probably have with you is your phone. Right? In fact, you may even be reading this abstract on your phone. You are not alone, researchers at Baylor University polled hundreds of college students regarding their cellphone habits; they found that women spent an average of 10 hours/day on their phones, men spent eight hours/day, and 60 percent of the participants admitted to being “addicted to their devices” (getting agitated when their phones weren’t in sight, etc). Well, Office 365 has responded to this predilection with a host of mobile apps.

Come join me as we immerse ourselves in the world of O365 mobile apps. All attendees will be provided credentials to login to a pre-populated tenancy. We probably will not get to all of these apps, but we will get thru more of them if attendees pre-install the apps on their mobile phone or tablet:

  • Microsoft Apps
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote (not Microsoft Office Mobile)
  • OneNote Badge
  • Microsoft Outlook
  • Outlook Groups
  • Microsoft Teams
  • StaffHub
  • Microsoft SharePoint
  • Microsoft OneDrive (not Microsoft Groove)
  • Office Delve
  • Skype for Business
  • Office Lens
  • Yammer
  • Sway (only on iOS)
  • Office 365 Admin

 Apps for another time:

  • Office Remote
  • Arrow Launcher
  • Skype (consumer)
  • Cortana
  • Bing Search
  • Translator
  • Intune Company Portal
  • Intune Managed Browser
  • Dynamics 365
  • Project Online

Approval Workflow with Custom Interface Using No Code – November 17, 2016 2-4pm

Topic: Approval Workflow with Custom Interface

Approvals are the most common type of processes that companies use in SharePoint. Getting around in a SharePoint site and understanding how to interact with and trigger workflows can be tricky when it comes to end-user interaction with the system.

In this session, learn about some of the simple ways that approvals can be used in SharePoint, as well as how to create an easy user interface, to make the process as painless as possible for the business users. This no-code solution is built using SharePoint Designer workflows and out-of-box Web Parts, it is forms-product agnostic.

Power Apps and Microsoft Flow – October 20, 2016 2-4pm

powerapps-and-flow

Presented by: Jonathan Weaver:

jonathan-weaver-2-3

Microsoft PowerApps use Connections to access/manipulate data in the cloud (not just O365) to create business apps — no coding required. These simple form tools sport a modern, mobile ready user experience and facilitate rapid application development.

Microsoft Flow is a browser-based workflow designer (the same designer that Azure Logic Apps uses) that fuels PowerApps using control activities in response to triggers or the passage of time.

If you are interested in following along on your own computer, you should:

  • Have an active O365 subscription
  • Register for Microsoft PowerApps (powerapps.microsoft.com/) and
  • Download the PowerApps Designer Windows desktop App
  • Register for Microsoft Flow (flow.microsoft.com/)

Since you will be connecting to SharePoint Online, Excel Online, and Twitter, make sure you know your logins for those services.

SharePoint Branding Rebooted – Online or OnPrem

Rebooted.2

Alter the look, feel, and even functionality of _every page_ in every SharePoint Site in your entire Site Collection!

  • No Solutions
  • No Features
  • No SharePoint Add-Ins (Apps for SharePoint)
  • No Add-In Webs (App Webs)
  • No Composed Looks
  • No Custom Master Pages
  • No Design Manager
  • No Publishing Page Layouts (unless you need them)

Apply your “brand” (jQuery, custom JavaScript, custom CSS) with the click of a button, remove it just as easily. Update your assets using whatever editor suits your fancy: Notepad, Notepad++, Visual Studio, SharePoint Designer, Sublime Text, Hot Dog Pro (is that really still a thing), etc.

Every page? Yep… including application pages (_layouts), Web Part pages, wiki pages, dialog pages, publishing pages (if you insist); including every page in all future child Sites as well.

Change virtually anything you want:

  • Change the color, size, background of virtually any element
  • Hide elements that you don’t want the user to see, provide a UX to resurface it if you wish
  • Alter the color for each calendar in SharePoint Calendar Overlays
  • Remove “Pages” from the SharePoint breadcrumb
  • Add animations and transitions, anything jQuery can do really
  • And so much more!

If you have a general understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and need to brand SharePoint, this session is for you.
